UpTempo Group's curator insight, January 20, 5:32 PM

Google glass was one of the most exciting tech advancements in the world over the last two years, however it has also been one of the most disappointing. Google Glass is a gadget that uses a small projection to provide a Heads Up Display on a person's glasses.  This allows people to read their text messages, take pictures from their glasses, and even share on facebook using the small projection on their glasses (instead of looking at their Phones).

However, Google Glass had one major issue.  It was ugly!  People were largely embarrassed to wear the Google Glass in public.  Those that were adventurous enough to wear Google Glasses, were often called out as Geeks, or asked to remove the Google Glass because it made others around them feel uncomfortable (for fear of getting recorded without their knowing).

One of the leaders in the world of Optometry and Optics, Zeiss, may have solved this problem.  This article discusses the recent advancements that Zeiss has made in creating a Lens which may be used as a Heads Up Display for consumers.  the Lens can be easily fitted into stylish frames, removing the "ugly" factor of the Google Glass product.

Zeiss has been working in the work of optometry for over 170 years.  They were able to go from prototype to working smart lens in less than 12 months. As this article mentions, the smart lens product isn't yet ready for prime time, however, this innovator and leader in optics should be able to bring this new technology to our shelves in the near future.

The Eye Care Industry Focuses On Boomers -- And Millennials

The Eye Care Industry Focuses On Boomers -- And Millennials | Drs. Phillip & Lynne Roy & Associates | Scoop.it

"A recent study published inJAMA reports that in China (where rates of myopia have skyrocketed to roughly 90% among urban youth), the major cause could be a lack of sun exposure. But young adults aren’t the only ones struggling to see clearly. Older adults are also looking for treatments that address their age-related vision problems. Amid rising demand, the eye care industry is poised to accelerate. It’s already developing new technologies that not only treat, but also prevent (and in some cases eliminate) vision problems."

UpTempo Group's insight:

Very interesting article which highlights the need for an eye exam for two important generations--Millennials and Baby Boomers.  Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a significant problem on a global scale impacting the vision of the Millennial Generation.  Research points to many treatment options for patients diagnosed with myopia and an eye exam for children is the first step towards improved vision. For Baby Boomers, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration or two disease with a high impact in the vision issues of this generation.  Once again, an eye exam is a great step forward in early diagnosis and access to the new treatment options available for these diseases.

This article highlights an important reason for children to get an annual eye exam.  Literacy levels in children are closely tied to their vision.

UpTempo Group's curator insight, February 9, 5:51 PM

A recent study conducted in the U.S. highlights the need for young children to get an annual eye exam.  In this study 492 children between the ages of 4-5 were asked to complete a standard literacy test. The results of this literacy test were then compared to the outcomes of early eye exams. Researchers found that children with undiagnosed hyperopia had significant problems with the print sections of the test that covered recognition of letters and numbers.

Researchers estimate that up to 14% of preschool age children suffer from undiagnosed hyperopia.

Prior studies have proven a link between farsightedness and reading ability in school-age children. This study is one of the first to show a link between early untreated hyperopia and reading ability.  One of the researchers, Dr. Kulp, believes that undiagnosed hyperopia in early life may lead to literacy problems later on in their school years.

Dr. David Blair is an expert in the treatment of both hyperopia, farsightedness, and myopia, nearsightedness. For myopia, he is an expert in the treatment with orthokeratology, as well as corrective lenses and contact lenses.  If you are concerned about the vision of your child, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Blair for a comprehensive eye exam.
